What is Vitiligo?(also known as Contact Vitiligo, Occupational Vitiligo or Chemical Leukoderma)
Vitiligo is a fairly common condition that causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin. These are areas of skin with little or no melanin pigment. Any area of the skin can be affected by Vitiligo, but it is most commonly seen in parts that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck and hands.
Contact Vitiligo or Chemical Leukoderma is known to be caused by exposure to certain chemicals. Many of which are found in the production of Leather, Plastics, Soap, Printing Ink, Detergents, Photographic Chemicals etc.
Chemicals associated with Occupational Vitiligo (Chemical Leukoderma) include: Phenol & Catechol Derivatives; PTBP; Hydroquinone & Monoethyl derivatives; MBEH; Butylated Hydroxytoluene; Sulfhydryls; β- Mecaptoethylamine HCL; Sulfanolic Acid; Arsenic compounds; Chloroquine; Benzoil; Peroxide; PPD, Benzyl Alcohol.
What should I do if I am suffering from an Industrial Disease such as Vitiligo?
The first step if suffering from Vitiligo (Chemical Leukoderma) would be to call us so we can assess your claim for compensation and advise you on whether you will be eligible to claim.
The second step is to go see your GP who will need to take an in-depth history and establish a relationship between your symptoms and possible exposure to a causative agent. Blood tests and biopsy may need to be performed.
