What are Silicosis & Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis
Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) or Black Lung is a disease effecting many coal miners and is caused by inhalation of coal dust. Empysema results due to inflammation around the bronchioles . Even though Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (Black Lung) is usually symptomless it can progress, leading to localised lesions and in some instances fibrosis and impaired lung function.
In around 10% of all cases involving coal miners & mining a high silica component within the coal dust leads to a condition known as Silicosis.
Silicosis (Grinder’s Disease & Potter’s Rot) is caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust, resulting in inflammation, scarring & fibrosis of the lungs (Pulmonary Fibrosis). Silicosis is characterised by shortness of breath, fever, and cyanosis (Bluish Skin).
Common sources of crystalline silica dust include: sandstone; granite; slate, coal & pure silica sand.
Who could be at risk of Silicosis & Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis? As the name suggests Coal Miners / Workers & people who work with these materials especially foundry workers, potters and sandblasters, find themselves most at risk. Other forms of silica, such as glass, are less of a health risk, rarely leading to Silicosis as they are not as toxic to the lungs.
