What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer of the Mesothelium (the mesothelium covers the outer surface of most of our internal organs). Most malignant mesothelioma cases occur in the tissues covering the Lungs (pleura) & Abdomen. Mesothelioma is a rare tumor & is highly associated with Asbestos exposure. Benign Mesothelioma is not associated with Asbestos.
Exposure to Asbestos is the only known cause of Malignant Mesothelioma; symptoms may not appear for many years (30-50 years) after the initial Asbestos exposure.
A link between Asbestos exposure & Mesothelioma has been known since the early 18th Century. Almost as many as 8 out of 10 people diagnosed with Mesothelioma report exposure to Asbestos.

Asbestos the Hidden Killer?
Asbestos comprises of minute mineral silicate fibres. These can't be broken down or removed by the body and are highly irritant. Asbestos fibres cause scarring to the tissue linings of the lung, making gaseous exchange & breathing difficult. Prolonged high level exposure to asbestos may lead to Asbestosis, benign or diffuse Pleural Thickening, Asbestos induced lung cancer; also known as Mesothelioma.

Asbestos Exposure: Who does it affect?
Asbestos may effect anyone in a position or work environment where breathing in of asbestos fibres could have been an issue. Such as those who worked extensively with asbestos (e.g. repairing boilers, demolishing buildings, and asbestos removal workers), or even those who have lived close to asbestos factories.

What should I do if I am suffering from Mesothelioma?
- The first step if you are suffering from an Asbestos related lung disease would be to contact us so we can assess your claim for compensation and advise you on whether you will be eligible to claim.
- It is vital to establish a relationship between your symptoms and possible exposure to asbestos. If you have not done so already the second step will be to see your doctor who will be able to establish a link to asbestos.
- Breathlessness and crackling of the lungs are key symptoms of Asbestos related lung diseases. To confirm Lung function tests will probably be performed alongside a CT scan, chest X-ray or biopsy if Mesothelioma is expected.
- Further to this any medical(s) instigated by our solicitors will cost you nothing, they will be paid for by the solicitor and claimed back as a disbursement from the other side.
